Nelligala Viharaya
Nelligala is a temple and an International Buddhist Center
located in the village of Muruthalawa in Kandy province. It is a modern temple,
with the construction starting in 2015. The place offers a beautiful view of
the environment, lying on the hill. Some of the views from the top of the
mountain are the Hanathana Mountain Range, Alagalla Mountain, Batalegala. On a
clear day, you will be lucky enough to see Mount Sripada (Adam's peak). When
this spectacular view is combined with its immense beauty, Nelligala becomes a
popular destination among tourists and travelers from all over the world.
Although Nelligala is a Buddhist temple, it is also open to visitors from all
other religions. Without a doubt, Nelligala is a place that brings peace and
tranquility to its visitors. The golden Buddha statues of the temple create a
spectacular view against the blue sky above. In addition, a new statue of God
Saman sitting on a White Elephant, many stupas, and many things to see in this
amazing place. Another special feature of Nelligala is that the temple contains
sacred relics of Lord Buddha. If you visit in time, you can participate in the
Buddha Pooja (unique offering) with traditional Sri Lankan dancers and
melodious musicians.
Battle of the Temple
By saving a wild forest in 2014, the Nelligala Sacred Area
was created. It took six years of hard work to build this sacred place in the
heart of a spectacular mountain, while ensuring the preservation of the forest.
The sculptures and designs are golden in color with the special gold plate
containing the Bo Tree. There is also a 70-foot-tall gold Stupa shaped like a
drum standing out in the blue. It should be noted now that the construction of
this Stupa was completed in three months.
When you reach the top of Nelligala Rock, you will see
Alagalla, Hanthana, Hunnasgiriya, Batalegala and Atipala Mountain Ranges around
you. The feeling of divinity creeps in the moment you enter the Nelligala
International Buddhist Center.
Adding to the sanctity is the Sri Sumana Saman Deva Statue
which was recently built in Sabaragamuwa. The statue of Nelligala Sumana Saman
is a real place of worship that is a must visit for everyone. You can pay
respect to Lord Sumana Saman here - a Lord from the Aryan sect, who rides on a
white elephant which is called a luxury car, from the summit of Samantha
Girihasa.
You will also see an amazing statue of God Saman seated
majestically on a white cat - one of the finest man-made structures of this
era. god From her set teeth and perfectly shaped crown, every minute detail was
scrutinized. The Nelligala Center also has a bookstore where you can sit and
read religious memorabilia and spend more time in the temple for a deep
awakening and spiritual connection. The temple building is decorated with
natural scenes including pepper trees, clove trees, wild roses, bougainvillea
trees and birds.
Location, Meaning and Structure of Nelligala Temple
The Nelligala Temple is most famous for its unique
architecture and beautiful surroundings. This is a good place for the worship
of Buddhists and devotees. The statues of Lord Buddha which appear to be huge
and golden give the Nelligala temple its uniqueness. The Stupa was recently
completed. Hight of the Stupa is 75 feet. It shows that the temple contains the
remains of Lord Buddha and Arahats. Therefore, this is an important place for
Budhdhist. Subharathi Darma Shala is a very large building that will be
displayed near the entrance.
The height of this place is about 700 meters from sea level.
It has been developed and built according to International Standard. Most of
the structures have special features. Because it is a modern temple, you cannot
see traditional structures here like other temples. The land under the
Nelligala temple will be covered in a few acres, which will have enough space
for special purposes as well.
What do you see in the Temple?
One of the first striking images of the Nelligala Temple is
the ingenious construction of three huge Buddhist flags raised on a rock. Once
you get there, there are plenty of spaces available to park your car. You can
buy flowers and other Buddhist offerings from here. There is a beautiful stone
staircase that leads to a spiritual level. When you climb the stairs, you will
see a pond on the left with a statue of Lord Buddha and on the right a modern
restaurant. It only takes a few minutes to reach the summit where a spectacular
view from the top will lift your spirits. A stunning landscape of hills, green
tea fields and lush forests surrounds the spacious International Buddhist
Center that will make you want to stay longer!
The golden Stupa on the left reflects the sunlight. A large
bell hangs from a sturdy metal frame with a note that says it's a symbolic
gesture to a donor. from Thailand. A paved path takes you to the Temple where
sacred things are kept. Two golden lions are at the entrance and a group of
drummers welcome the guests to the Temple. Beautiful paintings are seen in the
rooms surrounding the souvenirs. On the right side there are huge Buddha
statues and a Bo Tree near the Temple.

Statue of Sumana Saman
The Nelligala Temple has been the most talked about recently
because of its new statue of Sumana Saman. This statue already opened to the
public in December 2020. This statue represents Lord Sumana Saman and his
sacred white elephant. Buddhists believe that the elephant is the vehicle or
means of transportation of Lord Suamana Saman. Apart from that, the statue was
erected towards the visible side of the Sri Pada Mountain. Buddhists also
believe Lord Sumana Saman resides in Sri Pada mountain.
Mr. Roshan Somadheera, a Sri Lankan artist by the name of
Wadula in the work, and his son made this work based on an idea by Ven.
Wathurakumbure Dhammaratana Thero. The Sri Lanka Army, the pride of our nation,
built the foundation from the bottom of the mountain to the top.
On the full month Poya day of Unduwappura, December 29,
2020, General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defense Staff and Commander of the Sri
Lanka Army opened this glorious monument Sumana Saman Deva to the public for
worship.
Beautiful Surroundings
You can get a 360 degree view at the top of Nelligala
temple. The view of the environment will definitely give you a wonderful
feeling which will be a spectacular sight. You can see many parts of the
districts of Kandy and the high mountains of the island. Apart from them, you
can clearly see a few prominent peaks. It can include Hanthana, Alagalla,
Hunnasgiriya, Andhagala, Atigala, Batalegala, Sri Padaya, Monarakanda,
Piduruthlagala, Kukulagala, Ambuluwawa and some of the big peaks in Knuckles
massif. The beautiful scenery of the surroundings gives an amazing feeling to
any viewer. The sunrise in the morning and the sunset in the evening are
spectacular to watch from here. But you will experience foggy weather on rainy
days.
Best time to visit Nelligala
October - January is the main rainy season. If you like
nature, the weather will be good, even if it is windy and foggy. The best time
to visit Nelligala Temple is between February and May. The daytime temperature
is around 25 C - 28 C.
Early morning is the best time to visit Nelligala. The cool
breeze that blows in the mountains gives you freshness. When the fog opens up
like a window on a slowly opening stage, the distant mountains in the distance
create a spectacular view. A 360-degree view of the mountains can be seen at
this place.
As the sun sets in the evening, the golden colour of the
distant mountains is spectacular. You can spend a lot of time and relax here in
the evenings and even at night, taking in all the beauty that surrounds you.

Nelligala International Buddhist Center is a place of
worship and it is best to wear appropriate clothing when you visit it. That is,
it covers the waist, hips, and knees. In addition, if the dress is white, it is
