Gadaladeniya Viharaya
Gadaladeniya
Viharaya
Gadaladeniya or Saddharmathilaka
Vihara, which has a location with the Gampola time schedule, was worked by
Minister Senadhilankara under the patronage of Ven.
The design of this temple, made
of a single dark stone, is similar to the engineering of South India. As
indicated by the Gadaladeniya Inscription, the temple was specially built by
designers, architects and Ganeshwaracharya. The structure of Gadaladeniya temple
can be divided into three parts mainly Antaralaya and Garbha Gruhaya. The
structure has a high roof made of dark stone. The organizations are made of
dark stones with a dance and surface models. The structure consists of two dark
stone columns on one side or the other, square and rectangular. At the base of
the summit there is a lion rampant, and at the top a lion. These peaks are also
carved with Hindu gods like Nataraja Krishna. The same is true of the peaks
where the figure of a man riding on a bull and the figure of a man on a fish
are made. The large and small pins are connected to a piece of stone. The
carvings on the roundabouts are also well organized.
At the entrance to the temple
there is a moonlight and on both sides of a small stone staircase there is a
column made in the image of Gajasinghe and on the right side is there is a
devalaya. The inscription mentions Utpala Vanna Deva Raja. The nave consists of
a reclining Buddha statue and four standing statues. Made of blocks and
plaster, the robes of the Buddha statue appear to be a wave of shock. The
object of the statue is round and the eyes are open. The serenity of the old
Buddha statues is not found in these Buddha statues. This includes the elements
of a deity statue as a South Indian engineer started in the production of the
statue. The power of the winged serpent on the statue is also similar.
The top of the temple is made of flat stones. At the top there is a dagoba with a round navel. The engraving says that there was a Buddha statue inside the dagoba. However, currently there is no statue. Rumors from far and wide suggest that it was captured by the Portuguese. This is also evident from the conservation work of the interior of the chaitya which was decorated with frescoes. Because of the moisture on the partitions, the dough breaks apart and the contents seem to be destroyed. Yellow, red, white, dark and green colors are used for these examples painted by the artisans of the Kandyan period. It can be imagined that the structure called Vijayothpaya in front of the Gadaladeniya temple was working at the same time. It is clear that the Gadaladeniya temple has got a mix of Buddhist and Hindu design.
